February 2008 02/19/2008

Dear Prayer Partners,

We’re gaining daylight quickly these days, but the mercury seems to be struggling to climb above -40 lately! We hear all the jokes about it being “colder than a mother-in-laws love,” but we both have great mother-in-laws!

Missionary Ronnie Starr’s Cessna 207 is in our hanger with both ends missing! The engine and propeller are off and being overhauled, and the tail section that had been sat on and bent by someone in a village is being replaced. The rush is on to get all the parts back on before we start back Operation Saturation in May. Please pray that Earl has “seeing eyes” as he rebuilds this plane for more service in the Lord’s work.

Earl is finishing up the annual inspection on our twin-engine Navajo. We praise the Lord that there have not been any major, bank-breaking problems. There are just several routine maintenance items that come with the larger plane. For a twin-engine airplane, that means we only have to buy about $1,600 worth of parts, plus rent a hanger on the international airport for one month. There has been a rash of plaguing problems with all the missionary planes we use. Coupled with temperatures dipping to -50F, commercial flights have been more dependable.

The online store for our fellow missionaries is up and running! Several orders have been placed, and things seem to be running smoothly. This service saves the missionary quite a bit of money; plus we trust we are providing a consistent, dependable ministry to these folks. Everyone who has used the store seems to really appreciate it and is helping us make it even better. You may view it at www.store.missionaircare.org

Your heart would have melted had you seen Bro. Ernie and Mrs. Anne’s face when I handed them emails some of you sent them through us. They couldn’t believe the kindness shown them during their time of illness. They read each word, look at the name, and ask, “Where do these people live?” We would like to join them in thanking you for your prayers and those who took the time to write them a note of encouragement. You gave a cup of cold water in the Savior’s name. They both ask you to continue to pray for them.

Lord willing, this summer will be a fruitful, busy time. Our goal of getting into 9 more villages above the Arctic Circle requires a great deal of planning and focus and must be bathed in prayer. Please pray that the Lord of the Harvest will work in hearts in a great way. We desire souls to be saved, saints edified, and the cause of Christ furthered! We can’t do it without your prayers and help.

We will be sprinting through spring and summer and making plans to start our second furlough in September. So, we’ll be scheduling meetings with many of our supporting churches soon. If you would like us to update or present our work at your church, please contact us to get scheduled.

December '07 12/11/2007

Dear Prayer Partners,

It seems like we just finished setting goals for our family and ministry for 2007; yet, in a few days, we’ll be celebrating the incarnation of our Lord! At the risk of sounding like our parents, the older we get, the faster time seems to fly!

Ministry Update: Our Lord has allowed us to meet or exceed all the major goals and virtually all of the less critical goals we set for ourselves in January ’07. The most important goal to us was also the one the Lord allowed us to exceed. It was so big that it took an enormous team effort from across the country. People had to give of their time, prayers, and finances, but it paid off. You guessed it; we were able to distribute whole Bibles into every household in 9 villages! Our goal was 7, but our Lord allowed us to help Bro. Ronnie Starr in 9! Over 40 souls received Christ as their Savior, and many rededicated their lives to the Lord! Lives were changed for eternity, both by those who were ministered to and those who ministered.

Another goal our Lord graciously allowed us to meet was the publication of an Alaskan mission’s newsletter, The Judean Journal. Fourteen other missionaries send us their updates, and we compile it, add a few articles on the philosophy of missions, and mail it to every fundamental Baptist church in Alaska. It helps to inform and familiarize churches, mission boards, and missionaries of what our Lord is doing through other ministries in the state. Thank you Bible Baptist Church – Fairbanks for printing them! The quality is very good, which brings honor to our Lord.

Another big goal was met when we acquired, by the Grace of God, the Piper Navajo. This twin-engine aircraft has already made a big difference in the dependability, reliability, and safety of our ministry. It has been interesting to see how it has added credibility to our work in this state as well. This aircraft has allowed us to carry more souls and complete more flights. Yet, some flights are too expensive when only 1 or 2 needs to travel. Virtually every flight we made this summer, we could have carried more had the plane been larger!

Another unexpected goal that is being met, Lord willing by the end of the year, is the creation of means for the missionary in the bush to place an order online through our web site. It will enable us to make the purchase, box the order, and ship it by the most practical means. From the testimonies we are receiving, this is saving some missionaries $200-300 per month in handling fees from bush order stores! This is no small matter, with fuel prices continuing to climb. Mark and Wendy Winans are heading up this facet of Mission Air Care. Please pray for this couple as they endeavor to grow into this ministry and fashion this unique and challenging addition to MAC.

We’ve listed some of the goals we accomplished, simply to let you know how your prayers are being answered, and the difference your gifts make. At the beginning of 2007, the year ahead seemed impossible. Now at the end of the year, we are better prepared to face the challenges of 2008. When we hear your testimonies of what the Lord is doing in your lives, see the sacrifices you make to enable us to serve up here, and reflect on our precious Savior’s love towards us, our family gladly presses on.

Your prayers on our behalf mean more than you can imagine. Soon, we’ll be gaining daylight again, but the frigid temperatures are just beginning. Your extra gifts this time of year enable us to give gifts to others and remind us that we have many friends who pray for us across the country. Thank you! You are a blessing to our family. From the Malpass family to yours, Merry Christmas, and God bless you.

Summer '07 09/11/2007

Dear Prayer Partners,

It is hard to believe our Alaskan summer is almost gone…already! It was a great week! (Just kidding) Although we have sent out at least 5 electronic updates to those who are on our e-mail list, we noticed we haven’t sent out a hard copy of a prayer letter since May! Please forgive our negligence. We’ll try to summarize the summer, concisely.

Ministry Update: Three inspections on missionary aircraft were completed in time for another busy flying season. Brother Tore Mitchell came up from Maine to ensure the last one was completed on time and even helped with reorganizing our hanger, so the twin-engine Navajo would fit in it! It took a little bit of engineering, but the larger plane fits in nicely. Although the snow-packed runway will prohibit using the hanger in the winter months, we will at least have access to it during the summer and early fall months. Thanks to Bro. Dave Crispell for helping again this year with flying & other projects. Those who support these missionaries have strengthened our ministry! Thank you.

Brother Tom Wilson & Dean Tesch came up from our sending church in May, and with the help of several other “Friends of the Ministry” completed the prophet’s chamber above the office in the hanger. Check out the finished room on our web site photo album. What a valuable addition to the ministry!

Every summer, missionaries in the Alaskan bush are helped by Bible-college students. Here is an excerpt of a thank-you note we received from one such team. It is really for you, our supporters.

“Please accept my thanks for providing safe, efficient, and economical missionary aviation services in the bush of Alaska for the Bob Jones University Alaska Mission Team. Please also express my appreciation to your supporters who make the plane available at a cost that a mission team can afford. The Navajo that God gave Mission Air Care allows the BJU team to finish camp duties on Saturday at noon on the Kenai and still get the team to the village by evening of the same day. This allows the team to be in village services on Sunday and prepare for the coming week of VBS as well. Moreover, the team can then get back to camp at the end of the week and get the next group of students off to the next village in a timely manner! Missionary aviation after the manner of Mission Air Care is essential in Alaska!” Brett Z.
It is hard to appreciate the task that this twin engine preformed this summer without understanding how large this state is. Thank you to all who prayed and gave towards the plane!

Operation Saturation has truly been used of God. Our desire has been to help Missionary Ronnie Starr get a whole Bible into every home, in every village north of the Arctic Circle, and also hold services in each village. To date, nine (9) villages have been “saturated,” 54 decisions have been made, and 43 of them have been salvation decisions! Our Lord has seen fit to use the Bibles, DVD’s and literature given out to lead souls to Him even after the teams leave. Time and space prevent the telling of so many testimonies of miraculous interventions. There are many religious folks in these villages, but the biblical ignorance is almost unimaginable. Please pray for more laborers for these needy villages! It takes tough families to live in the villages, but the need is great.

The twin engine airplane (Piper Navajo) has proved its worth this summer. Those who prayed and gave towards the plane can be assured that it was time & money well spent. We were able to shuttle more teams around and had fewer canceled flights because of weather than any previous year! That directly results in more souls being ministered to. We had virtually no break-downs all summer, and only during a regularly-scheduled inspection has anything significant mechanical problem occurred. Along with the standard maintenance items, (filters, oils, lights, etc…), a hydraulic pump failed on the right engine. It wasn’t until it was not working that we found out that the one on the left engine was too weak to work in flight. Unfortunately, Earl and the plane were in the air when the pump failed. He had Mark Winans pump the gear down by hand, and they landed safely. These added expenses are putting us in a crunch, so please pray that the Lord will provide for these needs.

Family Update: Our family did take a vacation! Since this was our first one, we have much to learn. Primarily, there are times when there are no salmon in the rivers! We arrived between salmon runs and didn’t get a bite, but there’s always next year! Thanks to all those who so strongly encouraged us to take a break. We had a great time off. Lynn & Jeremiah are better prepared to tackle 7th grade home school now!

Earl’s health has been slowly and steadily deteriorating for about a year, and it was during this time of rest when he determined something had to be done. Most received the e-mails explaining what the doctors discovered from the biopsy, and we praise the Lord for improvement in Earl’s health. As the fungus is clearing out of his lungs, he is able to get more oxygen, and that is a good thing. He feels much better, but will be on medication for 6-12 months. Thank you for your prayers, and please don’t stop!

During Jeremiah’s physical, based on his birth parents’ history, the doctor thought it best to perform an EKG and ultrasound on his heart. We praise the Lord for a clean bill of health. Suddenly, we wished we had a lower deductible! We’ll be making payments on medical bills for a while.

Thank you for your prayers on our behalf. It has been a busy summer and our Lord has shown Himself mighty. It is an honor to serve Him as an extension of your ministry. Much has been accomplished, and it’s hard to imagine completing any of it without the friendship, thoughts, prayers and gifts from you folks. You are a blessing to our family.

May 2007 05/16/2007

Dear Prayer Partners,

Since November, when we felt our Lord directing us to upgrade to a twin engine, we have seen many opportunities to see Biblical truths proved out in our ministry. It has been our heart’s desire to use this time of stretching as a testimony of God’s faithfulness. We want everyone to know that God’s Word is true. Ps 34:8 “O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. “

Ministry Update: The new plane “hit the ground running”…so to speak. The day after arriving in Alaska, Earl flew supplies to Pastor David Craig of Artic Circle Baptist Church. Pastor Mark Bohman and Steve Land went along to visit the Arctic village of Fort Yukon. Before leaving, a native lady approached Earl to explain that all commercial flights out of the village were full and that she was in dire need to return to Fairbanks. Since the new plane has more seating, Earl conceded to let her travel back to town with them. Soon after they were in the air, Pastor Bohman began sharing the Gospel with her. About 30 minutes later, she prayed and trusted Christ! Remember, the plane’s registration number is 316 AK (John 3:16 to Alaska!). Isn’t God good?! Please pray for Dawn as Lynn attempts to reach out to her and get her in a local church.

For the month of May, there are two missionary aircraft that need annual inspections. There will also be a team coming up from our sending church to build a dorm room of sorts above the hanger office. This will give those passing through a bit more privacy than the hanger office affords them. On the down side, now Earl doesn’t have to clean his desk off as often! We will also be prepping for the Bible distribution this summer. Bro. Ronnie Starr has the Bibles, Gospel DVD, tracts, and discipleship booklets being shipped to Fairbanks. Summer time will be a time for sowing God’s Word in the Arctic!

While watching a video of the prayer of dedication of the new plane, Jeremiah stated, “I can’t believe we have that plane up here.” He verbalized what many have thought. Many doubted it would happen, which is a little sad. Similarly, many doubt the likelihood of a genuine, God-sent revival in the villages of Alaska. God gave us this plane, because He plans on using it. Please don’t fail to pray for souls in Alaska, for those God has called to the villages, and for us, as we strive to lighten their load a little.

Family Update: Our family is glad to see spring arrive. It has been a busy 12 months, and this summer promises to be even busier. Based on strong urging from several quadrants, our family has scheduled something new this year. It’s called “vacation.” We’ll try a few days of it in July, and we’ll let you know what it’s like. We hear the fishing is good up here and thought we’d try it out! Jeremiah is still working on turning scrap steel into knives and trying to stick them into targets.

Your prayers for this ministry are appreciated more than we can express. Thank you. They are making a difference. Please don’t underestimate this vital aspect of support.

April 2007 03/24/2007

Dear Prayer Partners,

“I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.” (PS 34:1-3) We serve a great & mighty God! A casual look around us reveals the fleeting emptiness the god of this world offers. The meltdowns from Hollywood to DC are proof positive that fame and power will betray you and leave your soul dry and empty. Yet the Christian knows no matter how tough life gets here on earth, “It will be worth it all, when we see Jesus!”

Ministry Update: Thank you for praying for us during these “dog-days.” The Yukon Quest and Iditarod dog team races are over, and the same man and team won both races! Due to the flu, Earl was grounded during the race, but we still managed to get a few John & Romans out. However, no where near as many as we wanted to distribute. All sorts of people accepted these portions of scriptures, and the face of one young man sticks out in Earl’s mind. The last guy in a group dressed in Gothic garb. He took the scriptures and with an expression of near hopelessness said “Thanks!” and was absorbed by the crowd. Please pray our Lord will use His Word to work in everyone who received it.

Mark Winans’ training continues, as he has been accompanying Earl to Manley Hot Springs every weekend. We have enjoyed reflecting on the passage “Looking Unto Jesus” for the last several weeks. He truly is a Great Savior. He truly deserves our faithful and “acceptable” service. (Heb. 13:28)

Our Lord prompted us to compile a quarterly, state-wide mission’s newsletter at the beginning of the year. Because of our unique ministry, we have contact with most of the fundamental missionaries in the state. It is yet another service we can offer them by getting their names and needs to the churches in this state. If you are interested in receiving a copy of this newsletter, please contact us and request a copy. But you must promise to pray for these missionaries up here! (Eph 6:18,19)

The annual inspection is complete on our Cessna 206, and it is being readied for the 30 hour flight down to SC around April 2nd. We are praying and ask you to pray for the remaining funds needed. The words are hard to come by to describe how important this is. We have sold virtually everything we have of value to meet this need. And yet it is incredibly humbling, for those who seem to have the least, give the most. We are trusting our Lord for the entire amount and still claim Jeremiah 33:3 for this project.

Family Update: While Earl & Jeremiah whimpered through the cold and flu season, God graciously kept Lynn from getting sick. God was good! We don’t know what would have happened if she had gotten sick! We are all healthy now and are enjoying the return of the sun – up from 4 hours to over 12 hours of daylight now. Hopefully, we have seen the last of the -40 temps for this season. 300 gallons of heating fuel every 6 weeks gets expensive!

Our calendar is full from June through to August, so there’s not enough room to tell of everything going on this spring and summer on a written page. So if you are interested, check out our calendar on our website. God was good to us to give us folks like you to pray for us. Thank you for your prayers, and know that we pray for you folks too. Stay faithful to our Lord!

Earl, Lynn, & Jeremiah Malpass
